Naira, top-ups and advertising

Money in Lagos Life

Lagos Life is free to play and has a real economy on top of that. Here is what is free, what costs money, and how the game actually makes its income.

The short answer

Lagos Life is free to play. The city screen advertises "playing right now — free". You can register, create a character, choose a home, travel the map and take part in city life without paying anything. Sitting on top of that is an economy you can put real money into if you want to.

If you are trying to decide whether to spend, the useful question is not "is it free" but "what does paying actually buy, and what is the game's real business model". Both have clear answers.

In-game naira

Lagos Life runs on in-game naira — ₦. It is the game's currency for the things you would expect: your home, the items you keep in it, and the cost of moving through the city's economy. Money you earn in the game stays in the game.

That last point is not us being cautious, it is the game's own terms. In-game naira, items, houses and jobs "have no real-world value and can't be cashed out, sold or transferred outside the game." Treat every naira in Lagos Life as belonging to Lagos Life.

Worth internalising

You cannot cash out. Lagos Life's economy is for playing in, not for arbitrage. Anyone offering to buy or sell Lagos Life naira outside the game is offering something the terms do not allow.

Topping up with real money

You can top up your in-game wallet with real money. When you do, you are buying in-game naira — nothing else. Payments go through the game's own payment provider rather than a third-party reseller, and the game's terms are explicit about the two cases where you should ask for help: if a payment went through but nothing arrived, or if you were charged twice.

Two sensible rules before you spend:

  • Play free first. You can evaluate the whole game — the map, the character system, the election, the daily cycle — without paying. There is no paywall between you and understanding whether you like it.
  • Purchases are final once delivered. That is the stated position, with the refund path reserved for failed or duplicated payments. Decide deliberately rather than impulse-buying an outfit.

How Lagos Life actually makes money

This is the part most players never notice, and it is the most interesting thing about the game's business model: Lagos Life sells advertising inside the city.

It runs two ad products:

  • Billboards. In-city billboard slots that brands can buy, each with a picture and a link. The game describes them as visible on the city map, which is exactly how you experience them — you walk past real adverts from real Nigerian companies while playing.
  • Sea plots. Advertising space out on Lagos Lagoon, positioned on a grid across the water. These are large, unmissable, and priced as a premium placement.

The slots are time-limited and do free up, which is why the mix of advertisers on the map changes. If you have ever wondered why a Lagos startup's logo is floating on the lagoon in a life-sim game, that is the answer: it was bought.

Why this matters even if you never pay

An advertising-funded free game has different incentives from a subscription game. It needs players, and lots of them, because the advertising is worth more when the city is busy. That is a good sign for free players: the game is built to be accessible and to spread, which is exactly how it reached a million players in three days.

It is also a reason to expect the map to keep changing. Advertisers come and go, and the game has two locations — Airport and Refinery — already labelled Coming soon.

If you are a business

The advertising is open to brands, and the audience is genuinely unusual: a large, concurrent, Nigerian, mobile-first audience inside a Lagos-themed world, with players travelling between named landmarks all day. In-game billboards and sea plots are bought directly from the game. We do not sell or broker them — go to the game itself.

The short answer on cost

Playing is free; only the optional top-up costs anything. The full breakdown of what you get for nothing is on is Lagos Life free.

Our advice

Play for a few days first. Lagos Life's daily cycle and multiplayer city are what make it worth staying for, and you can experience all of it before spending a naira. Then, if you top up, do it through the game itself.
